The Easter basket was especially popular in the countries of central
and Eastern Europe as the egg represents fertility and rebirth in
past legends. It appears to have been brought to the USA in the 18th
century by the same German settlers who introduced the
Easter bunny.
In earlier times when Easter bonnets were at their most popular it
was common for the bonnet to be used in place of a the now modern
Easter basket.
Today you can buy a large range of Easter baskets to suit all tastes
and pockets. These either come pre-filled with goodies or empty for
the Easter bunny to fill.
